Addictions from 'nasty' drugs climb | Livingston Daily | livingstondaily.com

Synthetic marijuana, known by brand names such as K2, LOL, Spice, is hospitalizing local youth at alarming rates.

Scott Masi, an outreach and referral specialist for the Brighton Center for Recovery, formerly Brighton Hospital, said 18- to 25-year-olds now make up more than 50 percent of the hospital's inpatient population, compared to making up only 17 percent of the inpatient population two years ago.

He attributed the increase largely to the use of synthetic drugs being sold legally across Livingston County and the state.

Masi said patients admitted for synthetic marijuana use or the use of related substances like bath salts often exhibit "psychotic" and "zombielike" behavior, and noted that many patients have to be transferred to psychiatric wards or other medial facilities for neurological testing.
